An aromatherapy oxygen bar is a place where people can go to sniff aromatic oxygen through a plastic hose in their nose. The oxygen becomes scented by being pumped through bottles containing aromatic solutions, before being pumped through the hose to the nose. You can also choose to inhale plain oxygen. Aromatherapy bars usually offer the experience for five minutes to twenty minutes, depending on how much you want to spend. Someone will prepare the oxygen, hook it up to your nose and turn on the oxygen.

Aromatherapy Oxygen Equipment

The type of oxygen bar equipment most commonly used is a concentrator to collect and distribute the oxygen. The concentrators filters out the nitrogen and other harmful gases. Then it delivers concentrated oxygen (which generally is meant to be 95% pure) through a hose that is hooked up to your nose. With aromatherapy oxygen, the oxygen passes through a bottle containing an aromatic solution. All aromatherapy oxygen equipment should be looked after and cleaned thoroughly to prevent the risk of people inhaling bacteria or other harmful substances.

Where Can They Be Found?

Aromatherapy oxygen bars can be found in normal nightclubs and bars and health spas. Oxygen bars are popular in Japan, Europe and Canada. They are also available in the United States and are now branching out into other countries. They were only introduced in the 1990s, and so they are not yet available in all states and countries. They may also not be legal in some places.

How Much Does it Cost?

The cost of an aromatherapy oxygen bar experience depends on how long you want to inhale the scented oxygen. Generally, it costs about $1 a minute. However, different places may charge different prices. Some places also offer discounts for people who use their services often.

Is It Therapeutic?

Some oxygen bars claim that the aromatic oxygen has therapeutic properties. It has even been labeled as a cancer cure and there have been suggestions it can ease arthritis pain. However, there is no research to back up any of these claims. People who use oxygen say that it reduces stress, increase energy levels, relaxes the body and help relieve headaches and sinus problems. There has been no long-term scientific research to back up any of these claims.

People with certain medical conditions may need extra oxygen. However, these people should have their oxygen administered in a medical setting, such as a hospital or doctor's surgery.

Is There Any Risk?

With aromatherapy oxygen, there is a risk that the person may inhale irritants or particles that may cause an allergic reaction. People with asthma or allergies need to be very careful when using aromatherapy oxygen bar.

Some oxygen bars use aromatic oils to create the scent. Oil-based aromas may cause an inflammation of the lungs. There is also the danger of inhaling bacteria, particularly if the oxygen bar equipment or any oxygen bar accessory is not cleaned properly.

People who are inhaling oxygen for medical reasons, such as emphysema, may be at risk if they do not have their oxygen administered by a medical professional. They can inhale too much oxygen and stop breathing. People who have received bleomycin as part of chemotherapy treatment may be at risk if they take too much oxygen for too long a period.
